Good Energy

I have been thinking about the chain or web of good energy in our communities.  There a many of these, and I have two that I am part of.

Food for our worms
JoJo's Thai Kitchen saves their vegetable waste for our worms. By going this, food waste is diverted from the waste stream (typically about 15-20# per week). We pick it up and feed our worms. The food waste feeds more organisms, and any left over food waste goes to Garbage to Garden to make compost. the food waste is turned into healthy soil for others to use in their gardens.

Buckets for our worm sales
Micucci’s graciously saves plastic buckets that they have rinsed that cannot be recycled. These buckets would otherwise be destined for the regular garbage (less plastic and bulk in the waste stream). During peak season this can be upwards of 20 buckets per week. A friend picks up the buckets when he is shopping at Micucci's and washes them before delivering the buckets in large batches for which I give him Dunkin gift cards. This is a low-cost resource that I have difficulty obtaining. He often gives the Dunkin' gift cards to unhoused individuals so they can get food and comfortable temporary shelter from the weather.  Kindness to other humans who are dealing with challenges in their life.

I believe that collectively these efforts make a difference. I am feeding my worms with food waste, returning the nutrients to soil, worms, and reusing food buckets, reducing the need for new plastic while reducing plastic in the waste stream.
